Latest Trend in Web design... and...

Special Search Engine Newsletter Part3

This email newsletter can be found on the web at http://www.hardweb.com.au/october05newsletter.html

Hello again HardWeb clients!

Sorry about the delay but web work has been BUSY!

I definitely haven't forgotten about you and this week I will talk about two important things:

1. The Latest Trend in Web design
2. Part III of my Search Engine challenge.

The Latest trend in web design is definitely CSS which stands for Cascading Style Sheets.

What is CSS?
CSS is a web-standard that is combined with HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) to make webpages.
HTML is still the language to write webpages in but CSS is added to HTML to improve it in a few different ways.

The wrapup is that CSS defines how a webpage looks in a separate document called the Style Sheet.
This make the webpages smaller in file size so they load quicker - Good!
Also the author (you and me) has more control over how the webpage looks and can change things like a heading colour - across the whole webpage in one go without going to each instance of it.

Hmmm is sounds complicated and frankly it is more complicated than HTML but it has a new box of tricks that makes it hard to ignore. For instance the scroll bars with colours on them is an example also the way it handles outlines of boxes is better than plain HTML.

If you want me to advise you on a CSS revamp of your website please contact me, the main difference will be the shorter loading times of your webpages plus a few new visual tricks that can be applied.

Part III of Thatch's Search Engine Challenge!...
"Gold Coast web design" NineMSN(Aus) Google Google (Aus) Yahoo Yahoo (Aus) MSN
Initial Search 11th 15th 10th 11th 11th 34th
Wk 1
(after tweaking links)
5th 2nd 2nd 19th 19th 9th
Wk 24 (after not much) 15th 2nd 1st 25th 24th 8th

Hmmm....

Some of my results have slipped!
Down 10 places in NineMsn, Good in Google -Number 1 in Google Australia!, down 5 and 6 places in Yahoo and up slightly in MSN.

I must admit I never did get around to tweaking the titles of my webpages as I said I was going to do.
The good news is I am going to revamp my entire website over the next two weeks and in that time change the Titles and the names of some of my webpages.
Well that's the plan anyway, you can see I have started with the new header on this page.

I think the big lesson here for everyone is to monitor your search engine placement and to change the content regularly, apparently the search engines like a page that is updated with new content regularly.
I don't know why I have slipped - maybe some of my competition has done some tweaking of their own but the basics can never be ignored - that is:

  • Make sure that the keywords that you want to be found with e.g web design , ARE IN in the content of your webpage somewhere near the top
  • Try to cultivate links to your website from other websites
  • The Title of the webpage (blue bar across the top of the browser) is important, make sure it is relevant to that webpage that is describes and has some good keyword in it. (This page's Title is "Hard Web October 2005 Newsletter")
  • the actual webpage name is important so I should have a page hardweb.com.au/webdesigngoldcoast.html instead of aboutus.html

Have a great summer everyone and here's what ©Dilbert has to say about getting an early season tan...
