What is web design?

You could say web design is graphic design for computer monitors.

There are a few extra dimensions to web design but the basic purpose of transmitting information to an end user is upheld.

Good web designing attempts to transmit information in a user friendly way.
There are a few good rules here that my business always trys to follow

Simple layouts that don't confuse are better
Consideration for downloading time is paramount
There should be a hierarchy of information that leads the user to where you want them to go
Make it EASY to navigate the website not DIFFICULT

Web design is about designing the layout of the page and the information contained in it so that it is CLEAR what the webpage's purpose is, therefore it is not an exercise in figuring out what is going on. There is not enough time for confusion.

Probably my biggest influence is Jakon Nielsen - sometimes called the "Usability Guru" of the web.
His website http://www.useit.com/ is very ugly but very useable and that is what he is all about.
